In December 2019, I had the pleasure of visiting Domaine Zafeirakis, a hidden gem in the heart of the fertile plains of Tyrnavos in Thessaly, set on the foothills of Mount Olympus, just a short drive from the town of Larissa.
Here, the vines flourish in the shadow of the mythical mountain, soaking in the region’s unique terroir and crafting wines that are as vibrant as the land itself. The crisp winter air carried a quiet serenity over the vineyards, starkly contrasting the vibrant life in the winery. It was an experience that left an indelible mark on my journey through Greece’s rich winemaking heritage.
Walking through the estate, I was struck by how seamlessly modernity and tradition coexist here. Christos Zafeirakis, the fourth-generation winemaker, welcomed us with a warm smile and a story that immediately drew us in. He shared his journey—how he returned to his family’s land after studying in Italy with a vision to embrace sustainable viticulture. Seeing the estate’s first organic vineyard, planted in 2005, was a testament to his dedication to preserving the land while producing exceptional wines.
I enjoyed exploring the estate’s organic vineyards and learning about the winery’s dedication to biodynamic cultivation. Domaine Zafeirakis embraces natural methods at every step, from nurturing the soil to allowing alcoholic fermentation to occur with spontaneous yeast. This hands-off approach to winemaking not only respects the environment but also ensures that each wine is a true reflection of its terroir.
I had the pleasure of tasting one of Domaine Zafeirakis’s most celebrated creations: the Limniona 2019 Rosé. This wine is a masterclass in elegance and balance. With its delicate aromas of ripe red fruits, the first sip greets you with vibrant strawberry—a hallmark of the Limniona grape—perfectly complemented by notes of red cranberries. The wine’s lively acidity adds a refreshing zest, while its incomparable finesse leaves a lasting impression. It’s the kind of rosé that feels effortless yet sophisticated, a true reflection of the artistry behind it.
The winery’s offerings don’t stop there. For example, their Malagousia (one of my favorite Greek grape varieties) is like sunshine in a glass—bursting with juicy peach and zesty citrus notes, rounded out by delicate floral whispers. It’s a wine that feels like a warm Mediterranean breeze, crafted with the utmost care from organically grown grapes.
We also tried the Foothills Chardonnay 2017, a beautifully crafted wine showcasing elegance and complexity. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels, it exudes enticing aromas of ripe apricot and dried fig, creating a rich and inviting bouquet. On the palate, it offers a full-bodied experience with medium alcohol, striking a perfect balance between its creamy texture and vibrant freshness. The oak aging adds depth and subtle notes of spice, enhancing the wine’s layered character.
Domaine Zafeirakis’s commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed. Their wines have garnered international acclaim, with critics praising their balance, depth, and expression of terroir. Such recognition underscores the estate’s role in elevating Greek wines on the global stage.
Domaine Zafeirakis is more than a winery; it is a narrative of passion, resilience, and a profound connection to the land. Their wines offer a journey into the heart of Greek winemaking, where tradition meets innovation.
